Overcoming Fears & Starting Your First Blog

Any new endeavor can be intimidating, especially if it involves venturing into a new area outside of your comfort zone. Here are a few things to consider before you begin.

Start with why you want to start a blog.

When venturing into unknown territory it is vital to find some area of familiarity or comfort. You’re thinking of starting a blog because you either have something to share or something to sell that you have some level of expertise. Start your mental process there.

Your imagination is far scarier than reality.

Starting a blog is really quite simple. All you need is a WordPress account and an idea. WordPress is very intuitive and any areas of confusion are easily addressed with their fantastic support structure. You have access to a database of articles, forums of other users (many of whom have your same skill set) and email/chat support that allows you to ask any question you have.

Rely on other experts to fill in your knowledge gaps.

One of the best things about the online world we live in is the shear amount of information available to each of us if we’re willing to conduct some research. You’re only a search engine query away from learning anything new. The level of expertise you possess in your area of specialty is replicated in each of those areas you currently know nothing about. Find the most successful people in the area you’re lacking and learn from them.

Accept that you will fail before you succeed.

No one gets everything right the first time and that’s OK. When you understand this it frees you up to take chances and use the so-called failures as learning moments to improve. Be prepared to be frustrated, angry and humbled but use these emotions as fuel towards continual improvement.

Never give up (or don’t bother starting).

One of the hallmarks of successful people is their remarkable level of perseverance. They never give up or give in. They are tenacious in their pursuit of their dreams. You need to adopt the same can-do spirit and attitude.

The better you know your audience . . .

No matter the idea you start out with, your audience will tell you what interests them so always remain flexible. Be prepared to interact with your audience and listen to what they are saying. You may even begin to grow with your audience and venture into areas you could imagine previously. Remember, your potential audience is the world so you never know where they might take you.

Don’t attempt to know it all before starting.

The online world is very forgiving for newbies. It’s OK if you aren’t perfect out of the gate. In fact, naïve mistakes can end up as assets so long as you own up to them. Your audience will actually see you more as one of them if handled correctly. The point is, you’ll never know it all so don’t be afraid to jump in with both feet and learn along the way.

Word of advice . . . you’ll be fine. There has never been an environment so open to helping each other as fellow bloggers. Lean on anyone that has experience and you’ll be good to go. Good luck!!!
