The Lost Sea Adventure: Tennessee’s Hidden Gem

Welcome to The Lost Sea Adventure

Nestled deep within the scenic beauty of Southeastern Tennessee lies a remarkable geological wonder that beckons adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. The Lost Sea Adventure, located in Sweetwater, Tennessee, offers a journey into the heart of the earth, revealing a subterranean world unlike any other. The tour covers about ¾ of a mile and is quite steep in a few spots. One, literally cool, fun fact . . . the temperature in the cave always remains a steady 58° F. Let’s embark on a voyage to explore this hidden gem.

If you don’t live in the American South there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of the Craighead Caverns or the Lost Sea lake. We were visiting friends in Tennessee, just south of Nashville, with the intent to only waterfall chase (Old Stone Fort State Park and Short Springs State Natural Area) when the Lost Sea Adventure was suggested as a great day trip. Located about 3 hours (175 miles) southeast of downtown Nashville, the drive on the 40E is beautiful and generally traffic free. As with so much of the south, the Lost Sea Adventure is seemingly in the middle of nowhere just off the TN-68, 10 minutes south of I- 75 (Exit 68).

A Tale of Discovery

In 1905, a thirteen-year-old boy named Ben Sands “discovered” an underground lake while exploring caves familiar to him due to his father’s role as a guide. The only problem . . . no one believed him. It wasn’t until the 1960’s, when preparing the cave for tourism, that the lake was found again. On a cool note, when the caves were eventually opened to the public, the first boat tour was for a single visitor . . . an 85 year old Ben Sands, finally vindicated for his previous tall tale.

Named after Cherokee Chief Craighead, who held ownership of the land in the early 1800s, these caverns have a rich history preceding Ben Sands’ discovery. Archaeological excavations have unearthed various artifacts within the caves, including projectile points, jewelry, and pottery, shedding light on the lives of those who once traversed these underground passages. Additionally, remarkable discoveries such as fossilized prints of a prehistoric jaguar dating back 20,000 years further emphasize the caves’ historical significance.

The Lost Sea Adventure Experience

The Lost Sea Adventure begins with a descent into Craighead Caverns, a labyrinthine network of underground passages that have captivated explorers for centuries. You walk down a slight downward angled bright yellow tube, a man-made tunnel that brings you down into the bowels of the cave. After a short introduction from your guide, the adventure begins. You’ll be treated to a geological treasure trove rich with crystal clusters known as anthodites (cave flowers), along with stalactites and stalagmites that litter the limestone walls. Though not as dramatic as those found in Iceland and North Carolina, there is a small waterfall located just before the lake and, to round it off, you’ll also see a wicked red hole that seemingly has no bottom.

The caves are rather open and well lit, for the most part, but you’ll need to keep an eye out for low hanging rocks. The guide will give you plenty of warning and the groups are kept small enough for everyone to hear instructions. You’ll learn about the history of the cave from the many Native American artifacts and it’s role in America’s Civil War to it’s rich moonshine legacy. If you love intricate rock formations you might find yourself falling behind your group and, just before going to the lake you’ll experience a moment of complete and utter darkness that is very cool.

The Lost Sea Adventure Lake

As your group ventures deeper into the caverns, they are greeted by a breathtaking sight: the largest underground lake in the United States, known as the Lost Sea. It lies a staggering 140 feet beneath the ground! This hidden wonder is estimated to stretch 800 feet in length and 220 feet in width in Monroe County. Yet, this visible portion is just the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface lies even more. Cave divers, dedicating years to mapping its expanse, have yet to reach its end. This leads to the belief that the Lost Sea might be the largest underground lake across North America.

You’ll go on a 20-minute boat ride that explores the main basin of the Lost Sea Adventure Lake. The lake stretches over four acres and plunges to depths of more than 140 feet. Its crystal-clear waters are home to a diverse ecosystem of unique aquatic life, including rainbow trout and an elusive species of blind cave fish. Illuminated by softly glowing lights, the caverns take on an ethereal beauty, with towering stalactites and stalagmites casting intricate shadows against the rocky walls.

Enjoy Some Family Fun

When the tour is done be sure to check out the gift shop then, on your way back to the parking lot, check out the quaint little area across the walkway. Here you’ll find a Blacksmith, General Store, Sweet Shop, wishing well and a very cool Glass Blower with loads of trinkets and figurines for sale. The kids will love to watch a master at work. If that’s not enough, there’s a replica Gem Mine where your kids could strike it rich!
