Stone Mountain Georgia: A Natural Wonder

Welcome to Stone Mountain Georgia

Nestled amidst the rolling landscapes of Georgia, just a short drive from Atlanta, lies a geological marvel that has captured the hearts and imaginations of visitors for generations: Stone Mountain Georgia. Towering above the surrounding countryside, this majestic monolith stands as a testament to the power and beauty of nature, while also serving as a canvas for centuries of human history and culture. One could spend a few hours, or even a week, at Stone Mountain Georgia. There is that much to do . . . so let’s get started.

Stone Mountain, Georgia . . . a Geological Wonder

Standing at over 825’ in height, and stretching across more than five miles in circumference at its base, Stone Mountain Georgia ranks among the largest exposed granite outcrops on the planet. Fashioned over millions of years by the gradual erosion of surrounding rock formations, its imposing cliffs and rugged terrain offer a remarkable juxtaposition to the rolling hills of Georgia’s Piedmont area. While primarily composed of granite (featuring distinct veins and larger granules), Stone Mountain Georgia also features elements of quartz monzonite and granodiorite. Completed in 1972, it depicts three prominent figures of the Southern Confederacy: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson.

We recommend visiting Stone Mountain Georgia in the morning as you’ll experience smaller crowds and the sun will illuminate the carving side of the mountain.

Stone Mountain Park: Where to Start . . .

From the Main Gate just follow Jefferson Davis Drive to the Skyride Parking Lot. It’s a pleasant 5 mile drive that will take about 15 minutes. From the Skyride Lot you’ll have immediate access to the Summit Skyride (cable car to the top of the mountain), Dinotorium (dinosaur fun for the kids), Geyser Towers (playground for the kids) and Memorial Hall (best views of the mountain). For reference, you can continue past the parking lot on Robert E. Lee Blvd and drive a full loop around the entire mountain.

An Outdoor Enthusiasts Playground

For outdoor enthusiasts, Stone Mountain Georgia offers a wealth of recreational opportunities. Miles of hiking trails wind their way around the mountain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and glimpses of local wildlife. Visitors can also enjoy picnicking, fishing, and boating on the lake at the mountain’s base, or challenge themselves on the ropes courses and climbing walls at the nearby adventure park. There are also plenty of opportunities for camping or RVing.

Hiking Stone Mountain Georgia

For those seeking a more adventurous outing, a hike to the summit of Stone Mountain Georgia promises unparalleled panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline and the distant Appalachian Mountains. About 1.2 miles Northwest of the Main Gate (1.4 miles Southwest of the Skyride Parking Lot) is the Walk-Up Trail parking lot. The trail starts off pretty tame with large swaths of ascending flat rock. Eventually this gives way to varying levels of large boulders that beg you to proceed by only hopping from rock-to-rock. Along the way you’ll see towering trees, vibrant wildflowers, and curious wildlife. At around the 30 min mark there is a covered shelter that serves as a perfect resting point as it starts to get a bit steeper.

A few minutes from the shelter you’ll come upon a plaque commemorating the Old Indian Trail followed by a particularly steep section marked by “steps” with rope “hand rails” most need to continue on. Once you’ve reached the top of the “stairs” you are treated to your first panoramic view. This is also another traditional resting place before the final leg to the top. As you proceed there are a few moments where it feels you are at the top only to be deceived. Be patient . . . the payoff is coming soon.

Finally, after a rewarding climb, you’ll emerge onto the summit of Stone Mountain, greeted by breathtaking views that stretch as far as the eye can see. The sprawling expanse of Georgia’s countryside unfolds below, with unparalleled panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline and the distant Appalachian Mountains. You can walk all around the summit, visit the snack shop/visitor center and even watch the cable car ascend and descend. From this height of 1,683’ above sea level, you can appreciate the panoramas of downtown Atlanta, the North Georgia mountains, and the surrounding scenery. When the sky is clear, it’s possible to see as far as 60 miles from atop the summit.

Once you’ve had your fill of the summit it’s time to descend. As with most climbs, the way down seems faster and easier. No exception for Stone Mountain Georgia. You can either double back or follow the white line down. Both will end up at the base. The total hike, with a few rest stops and a bit of exploring at the top, took us a bit under 2 hours. Great exercise, views and an enormous appreciation of nature.

Family-Friendly Attractions

Families visiting Stone Mountain Georgia will find no shortage of activities to enjoy together. The mountain’s summit can be reached via a scenic skyride, offering a thrilling experience for all ages. At the base of the mountain, the Stone Mountain Park offers a variety of attractions, including a historic plantation, a scenic railroad and the Music Across America Drone & Light Show that illuminates the mountain’s face with dazzling displays of color and music. Scattered throughout the park you can also find a train-themed put-put course, a 4-D theater, SkyHike (one of the country’s largest family adventure courses), two great dinosaur attractions (Dinotorium and Dinosaur Explore) plus the very cool Washington W. King covered bridge and the beautiful restored Stone Mountain Grist Mill.
